Kenneth H. Fischbeck, M.D. is chief of the Neurogenetics Branch, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), National Institutes of Health, USA. Dr. Fischbeck received A.B. and A.M. degrees from Harvard University and an M.D. degree from Johns Hopkins. In 1998 he came to the NINDS as Chief of the Neurogenetics Branch. He received the Cotzias Award from the American Academy of Neurology and the Jacoby Award from the American Neurological Association. In 2000 he was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. He serves on advisory boards for the Hereditary Disease Foundation, the Spinal Muscular Atrophy Foundation, the ALS Association, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, TREAT-NMD, and Biogen Idec, Inc. His laboratory studies the mechanisms of hereditary neurological and neuromuscular disorders, particularly spinal muscular atrophy and polyglutamine expansion neurodegenerative disease, with the goal of developing effective treatment. He has published over 190 papers and reviews.
