Leiden, The Netherlands, February 9, 2007 – Prosensa has announced today that Dr. Judith van Deutekom has joined the key team effective immediately. Judith van Deutekom has more than 20 years of R&D experience in molecular genetics. She was key to the development of the exon skip technology for DMD at the LUMC and was awarded for her efforts by the Princess Beatrix fund in 2001 and by the LUMC (C.J. Kok Award) in 2003.
“We are excited to have Dr. van Deutekom join our key team. Her expertise spans the scientific and DMD knowledge. Moreover, Dr. van Deutekom will be instrumental in our valued relation with the group of Prof. Dr. Gertjan van Ommen. We expect the DMD project and Prosensa to benefit significantly from her scientific insight,” says Gerard Platenburg, Prosensa’s CEO.
“This is an incredibly exciting time for the field of DMD genetic therapy and exon skip technology. To see the development of your research projects towards clinical applications is the dream of every researcher in human genetics. At Prosensa I will be able to be even more closely involved in the further development of exon skip oligonucleotides for DMD, but also for other diseases. I look forward to continuing the very close collaboration with the LUMC Genetic Therapy Group,” says Judith van Deutekom.
About DMD
DMD is a genetic lethal childhood’s disease with an incidence of approximately 1 in 3,500 newborn boys. Clinical signs of muscle weakness start as early as 2 years of age affecting all muscles. Treatment of patients with DMD to date primarily involves supportive treatments. No curative therapy, re-establishing the function of dystrophin, the protein that is lacking in DMD patients, is yet available.
